Short film: Pommel

Image
For this short film research I chose Pommel by Paris Zarcilla. Pommel is about two British-Asian gymnast brothers and draws on the filmmaker's own experiences of growing up in an Asian household in the UK. With an overbearing and disapproving father, the elder brother begins to take out his frustrations on his younger brother. Both Pommel and our short film are of the sports drama genere. sound can be used to assist in the creation of tension, mood, tone, and changes in rhythm. This short did not include much dialouge, most of the emotion and feelings were conveyed through the characters actions and faces. The short included mainlt diegetic sound. There was not much noise added to the movie. The use of mainly diegetic sound made the story seem more realistic. The director did however remove a lot of sound. This created tension and was able to focus your attention on the actors portayol of thier feelings. the most common clamps in this genere were close ups, over the shoulder shots

short film: last 3 minutes

Image
The film I chose to research was the last 3 minutes. This short film takes you through a tear-jerking flashback of a man's dying life. The short film the previous 3 minutes differs from our drama because in the last 3 minutes it displays a life drama meanwhile in our movie we display a sports drama. A Typical life drama would often be slower paced meanwhile our sports drama would most likely be a little bit faster.  sound can be used to assist in the creation of tension, mood, tone, and changes in rhythm. This short included little to no dialogue about his entire life showing his life early on and how he has progressively aged showing his adventures along the way, instead the dialogue is displayed through the characters' body language and emotions. This sound from within the film is both diegetic and nondiegetic, the diegetic coming from the different events such as the army or the new baby or the beach, and the non-diegetic coming from the background music trying to create a

Short film: Kiss chase

Image
For short film research I decided to watch the short film, Kiss Chase Ebele Tate. I looked for similarities between the drama genre and this film.  Common Sound: The film similarly uses non-diegetic sound to use calming music in most parts of the film. The film also uses background music to express emotion in the film. The film also uses sound effects which could be used in action films as well.  Common Mis-En-Scene: The film uses similar costumes to the drama genre with shirts and jeans. The film also uses the sun as a primary source of lighting to show the sweat on characters which brings out the intensity. Common Editing: Common editing between the film and the action genre is the use of lots of shaky camera movement and enhancement of images. The use of jump cuts are common in this film I like how the drama genre appeals to bringing out intensity in film which is not the hardest thing to do. Filming the drama genre also sounds extremely challenging but still fun. I think filming

Short film: falsehood

Image
This short film features sound, set design, and editing that are all relevant to our film. The diegetic sound is the first thing that comes to mind. This is a technique employed in drama films to communicate the film's emotions. The sound in this film is employed to convey the shock and anxiety he is experiencing. A non-diegetic sound is also used to depict the film's surrounding feelings. To make the viewers in shock, the film uses a dramatic entrance of the main character. Then there are gunshots and people fleeing to add to the film's unsettling atmosphere. The mise-en-scene in the film is inspired by the clothing. The man is dressed in typical street clothing, and the girl is dressed similarly. All of the characters wear the costumes that they are portraying, thus it is a true representation of their personalities. This is primarily utilized in drama to depict how characters ibehave and respond to emotions in their everyday lives and attire. Continuous editing was emp

Short film research

The phrase "short movie" is a teaser. Though the name would suggest otherwise, making a short film requires a lot of time, work, and energy. This movie taught me that the most important phase in filming a short film is planning, if not the most important step overall. Writing for the type of movie you are attempting to produce is one of the most important planning lessons I learned from this video. This seemed clear at first, but then I gave it more thinking. It is crucial that we avoid taking on more than we can handle while writing our script and making plans for the production of our movie. To put it another way, we shouldn't try to include anything in our movie that we are aware won't be feasible for us to produce. For instance, we must watch out for going over budget, include items that will cost more than we are prepared to pay, and writing for a cast that is larger than the number of actors we know we will be able to hire. We can truly start writing after we h

Short film: Fiction

Image
The ninth short film opens in a very gloomy and menacing environment. We rapidly saw that the genre had many characteristics with the action genre and was quite comparable to it. It was an action/thriller the entire time. There were several battle scenes and jump scares. Like in a usual action movie, there was a lot of CGI and gloomy visuals. The film's plot was plainly brief, and because it was so short, the audience was thrust into the center of a lengthier narrative. It follows character 9 as he seeks retribution for his comrades' deaths and vanquishes the monster responsible. There isn't much character growth, however one example is that character 9 was first afraid before becoming courageous. Since there is no speech in the short film, sound effects play a significant role in it. There are several distinctive sound effects and loud crashes, which are typical of the action genre. The feature-length movie was different in a lot of ways. The short film lacks conversation,

short film: La Jetee

Image
The remake of Le Jetee would cause  one to anticipate that 12 Monkeys would have many similarities, but they also differ quite a bit in terms of how they are manufactured and presented on screen. Le Jetee is an odd movie since it's a photo book of still images about a post-nuclear war time-travel experiment rather than a real motion picture. In contrast, the movie 12 monkeys tells the story of a prisoner who is taken back in time to learn more about a virus that was created by humans and that killed most of the planet's inhabitants. As most of both films takes place in futuristic settings with time travel, they may both be classified as sci-fi. One of the most important lessons I learned from seeing this video is that, when done well, remakes may match the atmosphere of original films. This is relevant to our project since we may utilize elements from well-made movies as inspiration and guidelines to create a movie that might be compared to Hollywood-caliber productions.Anothe

genre reserach: action

Image
For action, common angles for action include aerial shot, close up, long shot, and high angle. Common mis-en-scene for action include: the protagonist's costumes tend to follow suits (sometimes include capes) and "regular" clothing they wear when they are just living their normal lives and not fighting crime; while, the damsel in distress tends to wear light and flowy costumes to represent innocence and love. Lighting includes mainly natural as most action will occur outdoors rather than in- there are some special cases, such as when shown the villain's story, where there is low-key lighting used instead; actors are focused around the plot but generally include the male protagonist, male helper/ donor, female accomplice/ lover, evil villain, and supporting characters; makeup tends to be more emphasized on the protagonist/ villain and other makeup tends to include fake bruising/ blood on the other characters; props include vehicles (race cars/ motorcycles), weapons

genre research: romance

Image
These are the conventions for romance         Camera Movements Panning: This is used to show the characters and their surroundings especially in rising action or the climax when tension is high especially in a romance movie Tracking: This is used to add tension between 2 people          Lighting Low-Key Lighting is used to build tension between characters which is a needed trade in romance where there is a love between two characters.  Camera Angles High Shot Angles are used to demonstrate the emotions between the 2 people and when one has a higher power over another.  Low Shot Angles are used to demonstrate the power a character has have in the situation.          Elements of Romance External Conflict that the two lovers experience  Internal Conflict that only the audience sees Tension, Overcoming , and Love in many Scenes            Sounds Non-Diegetic: This is used to increase the effect of the emotion/dialogue of characters. Diegetic: Usually arguing with other characters  which

genre research: thriller

Image
Camera movements are crucial in creating suspense. In suspense, tilt is a crucial camera movement. It depicts the film's emotions by evoking a wondering emotion on the screen. This helps the spectator to experience the film's and characters' suspense. Zooming in is another camera action employed in suspense films. This depicts a character's feelings, which might keep the audience guessing. In a suspense thriller, lighting is extremely crucial. Low-key lighting produces a gloomy atmosphere that may make the audience nervous about what may come next. Over the shoulder and close-up shots are common suspense camera angles. The over-the-shoulder angle adds tension to the film and makes the spectator aware of what's going on.. This will heighten the film's suspense for the audience. Close-up shots reveal all of the characters' feelings, making the audience more concerned about what might happen. Emotions, anxiety, conflict, and high stakes are all characteristic

Researching our genre

Image
Choosing a genre is a super important aspect of our film. We narrowed it down to comedy, sci-fi, and drama. These genres are extremely unique and have very special storylines. I personally would love to research comedy as they are the most enjoyable watch. Comedy movies are extremely easy to create ideas, but the execution is hard. If you have poor execution in a comedy film then it will end up extremely bad. The next genre is sci-fi, sci fi is the opposite of comedy. sci fi is known for its obscure, un real nature that defies the limitation of real life. sci fi normally takes more advanced technology to create, as you are not following the "rules" of nature. Because of this, sci fi is a hard genre to pursue with a low budget, and very little time and experience. Drama is one of our personal favorites. I like drama because of the way it is able to create emotion in the viewer. Drama is often known to be overall emotional especially compared to other genres like comedy.

genre deciding

Image
My group decided to choose the drama genre. The genre looks extremely interesting to film with and I am supper excited to work on it with my group. We wanted to be original and try out a different genre this year since we have already tried the thriller. Since we have an extended amount of time for the film it makes it easier to choose the drama genre so we can add all the details. We chose the genre because it fits in with many of the shooting locations we have already decided on. This also helps us with the editing and music as well. Through drama we can really highlight the acting in the film so out number 1 goal is to perfect our acting in the film. We do want to focus on avoiding mistakes that are common in the drama genre. We want to focus on avoiding acting that is overdone and corny. We do need to tweak certain things on our pitch but we must go over that with our group before we can make those changes.
